Pocket Full Of Love!

Time for another pincushion! This one has two parts...a darling burlap pocket and a cute little needlecase. The pocket design came from the Handbehg Felts website and is a great size to hold a little something for your valentine? Or fill it with scissors, pencils, a needlecase...or chocolate! We added a stuffed wool heart to the front, in place of the flowers the pattern suggests, to go with the Valentine theme...and it's perfect for holding a couple of pins! This simple matchbook needlecase is the perfect complement. We've got some kits all ready to go for this one.

New fabric, coming in all the time! This line is called Urban Cowgirls, from Moda. We've got charm packs and eight pieces from this lovely collection, in shades of red, brown, taupe, and aqua. Stop by to see the rest...

Now for a sneak peek! We just put out a new shipment of Civil War reproductions from Blue Hill Fabrics, in two different colorways...here is a sample of the blues. There's also a stripe, and a couple more basics. You'll have to come check them out- photos never do justice to fabric, wouldn't you agree?

New Classes

Well, we kicked off the Prairie Women Sewing Circle today and it was a lot of fun! Busy too... so busy that we forgot to snap some pictures, so we'll have to do that next time! There was some discussion on English paper piecing and a few other techniques, some reading-aloud, and lots of show-and-tell. Looking forward to next time! Now, speaking of classes, we have a few others coming up that we're pretty excited about...

Big Stitch Quilting Overview is a two-hour introduction to this liberated style of hand quilting. This style has been around for a very long time and started out as a way to produce quilts quickly so they could be put to use; quilters took large stitches to finish a project fast. The large stitches were originally called utility stitches or long stitches. As quilting became a more publicized art, the technique gained awareness and the term 'Big Stitch' was coined by quilter Jo Walters in the later part of the twentieth century. A pair of Australian quilters and owners of the Sydney shop Material Obsession are helping to modernize the technique.

In the class, we'll go over tools and tips for Big Stitch quilting as well as the history associated with the technique. Below are some examples...let us know if you are interested in signing up or would like more information! The class will be held on Saturday February 25th or Friday March 16th from 11-1, so you have a couple options to fit your schedule!

Another class on the schedule is an intro to English Paper Piecing. We'll spend some time talking about tips and products that make this a really great (and portable!) technique. The class fee includes a kit for a simple pincushion to get you started. We're holding this class on Friday, February 10th from 11-1. Should be a lot of fun! The Prairie Women group worked on some hexagons today for a project down the road, and it seems that some of them might just be hooked...Below is an example of a paper-pieced design. Let us know if you'd like to sign up and learn more about this technique!

Snow and More Snow

Guess that sunshine from last week was a little bit of wishful thinking...looks like it'll stay winter for a while longer. Stay safe on the roads out there! We haven't gotten any fresh snowfall in our part of town, and we got some help clearing a couple of parking spots right in front, so the parking lot seems to be pretty drivable at this point. It's kind of pretty when the sun hits the snow...and it certainly makes for great sewing weather!

Speaking of snow projects, we put the work-in-progress Batik Block of the Month quilt up on the design wall last week. It's really starting to come together, isn't it? All this cold weather seems to create motivation to stay inside near a sewing machine and a warm iron...so we're getting projects done! This one is just two blocks and some sashing away from being sewn together, then we're just borders away from quilting. There's still a few slots open in the program if you want to join in!

Unfortunately, we had to postpone the first meeting of the Prairie Women's Sewing Circle due to the weather- they'll meet next week. We're really looking forward to the kick-off - be sure to stay tuned for pictures of all the fun!

New Inspiration

Not too early to start thinking about spring, is it? We seem to be getting a bit of sunshine, now if only it'll stick around...anyway, bright colors are just the thing. This new line from Northcott, called Emma, definitely delivers in that area. There are two distinct colorways in the line- chocolate and turquoise on an ivory background, and bright pink and green on white. Birds and flowers just shout sunny weather, don't they? We're thinking pillowcases, quilts...maybe even a cute little dress!

The new Stitch magazine came in today, and there are definitely some great ideas and inspiration inside...worth taking a look!

We also have this new Valentine line from Moda, and mixed it with some older favorites...rosebuds, hearts and swirls in red and pink would cheer up any room. Just in time to make some Valentine pillowcases! Or treat bags to hold Valentine chocolate?

And don't forget about the glittery Peeps fabric that came in last week... it's definitely time to think up some new projects!

Hope everyone had a wonderful and safe New Year holiday! Time to jump right back into sewing projects ... our January pincushion takes a little extra time but the result is totally worth it! The bee skep design is cross-stitched around the sides and the top of the pincushion on hand-dyed linen, then finished with some decorative yarn. We'll have two different colorways available- the aqua with chocolate accents that is pictured below, and tan with purple accents. Kits coming soon, but you can reserve yours now!

This new line is called Flora, from Moda, and it fits the style for the Amelie apron just right, don't you think? We've got some charm packs for this one as well.

As a reminder...our class list is posted on the class page of our website. There are some fun ones coming up... the Prairie Women Sewing Circle starts in a couple of weeks, and February is filled with free-form applique and crazy quilting opportunities. Stories in Cloth

Seems like all we talk about are new classes, doesn't it? We've got to get you through the winter weather somehow...

This class should be really exciting- it's a free-form applique handwork class. The instructor, Kellie Sammon, creates small works of art using interesting textiles and fibers, and draws from her own ideas for inspiration rather than following a pattern. She uses dimensional stitching and embellishments to add feeling and emotion to her pieces. Some of Kellie's stitchery was featured in a 2002 issue of Quilting Arts magazine.

The class will be focused on exploring your own creative ideas to produce meaningful imagery in fabric. This could be a great class for someone who likes handwork and is willing to stretch themselves artistically ... Below are some samples of Kellie's work.

We're offering this class on Saturday, February 4th from 11-5 pm. Included in the cost of the class is access to scraps of various vintage and new fabrics and fibers to work from, but you're encouraged to delve into your own stash. Space is limited to be sure to let us know if you'd like to sign up or have other questions!

New and Exciting Adventures

As much fun as it can be planning for the holidays, it's also time to look ahead to new adventures. In January, we are beginning Prairie Women's Sewing Circle-Journey 3, created by Heartspun Quilts. This is a new club for us, and it will be offered in place of the Jo Morton's Little Women monthly club. We'll miss our monthly Jo's club, but we're looking forward to something new and different!

Each month for six months, club members will meet to discuss the historical perspectives of quilting in America; talk about new techniques and ideas for small quilt projects; and explore the historical concept of "make-do", which can be used to add a scrappy and unique feel to a project. Participants will receive a new small quilt project each month, as well as a bonus project using hexagons. The projects are pictured above. There will be lots of opportunities for student participation, and it should be a fun time for everyone involved!

More Gifty Ideas

Hopefully your holiday preparations are going great...we're getting closer! Here are some more fantastic gift ideas if you've got some check marks to make on your list...

We talked about chalk cloth a few posts ago, and now we've got a sample! All you have to do is cut out the shape you want, prep it with a piece of chalk, and you're good to go! You can do placemats too, in fun shapes for the kids or classy shapes for the grownups (great for writing cocktail recipes!).

And of course, we couldn't say no to more ruffle fabric...this time in a peppermint stripe. Just in time for peppermint season!

The new Quilting Arts Calendar, a sewing book, or fabric in jars, shapes, and bundles...would all make great quick gifts.

See that doll bed in the photo? Those are handcrafted in Bellingham by a local artist. There are even a couple different designs to choose from- one has a heart carved into the headboard and the other has a diamond. These would make a lovely gift for someone who collects dolls, small quilts, or loves handcrafted wood items.

This is the newest line in the store from Bunny Hill Designs, called Puttin' on the Ritz. There are some lovely patterns, checks, and swirls to choose from...we've also got the jelly rolls in grey and pink. These would go great with lines from other Moda designers like French General and 3 Sisters.

Winter Wonderland

December already! Doesn't our little pincushion forest look just like a little Winter Wonderland? These fun little trees can be made in lots of different fabrics and decorated with as many shiny beads and sequins as you like. The smallest ones can be package decorations or an ornament for the tree. And of course, we all need a new pincushion, especially a seasonal one! The pattern company is called La Todera, and they've definitely got some cute crafty ideas! We've got kits to make this little forest up in the bright greens and reds that we are featuring here with all the fixin's or we've got the pattern separately as well. These cuties do not require any machine sewing either, so if you've got some young crafters you want to keep busy this is a great option!

Our December Calendar quilt took some quick thinking to find the right combination of ornaments, but it was worth it, don't you think? Pinwheels, bling, and some Texture Magic to create the 3-D packages under the tree...too much fun. As always, we've got kits for this sweet little tree...and this completes the series!

Lots of new gift ideas coming everyday...new books, linen thread, tote bag patterns...the possibilities are endless! Looks like we'll be ready for the holidays...

Gifts to give and receive!

Can you believe it's already the holiday season? Now that radio stations are playing Christmas music ... time for some quick thinking about gifts if you're just getting started or just finalizing plans. We've got some new things to play with...

Ruffle fabric is our new favorite...it just sounds fun, doesn't it? Whip up a quick scarf- we've got kits ready, and some styles just take one seam and you're done! Baby booties, a fun skirt, adorable leggings for a little girl...the possibilities are endless!!

Pillowcases are always a great option for kids and adults. We've got some kits made in holiday theme, sports, outer space, and a few flowery fun options. If you've never done French seams before, you'll love how crisp these look when finished, and they are a snap to make!

For the reader in your life, an e-reader cover might be just the thing. These covers can be adjusted to fit Nooks, Kindles, and other e-readers. You can choose the right fabrics to fit the style of the recipient, and there is even instructions for a pockets inside to hold reading glasses. We made ours up in chalkboard fabric, perfect for a student or teacher!

One of the many exciting finds at Quilt Market was new oilcloth in funky new colors and styles. We've got red and white polka dots and a black-and-white floral design. Garden chair covers, messenger bags...lots of great ideas!

Chalk cloth is a similar product - except you can write on it with chalk! Placemats to keep the kids busy at holiday dinner? Samples coming soon!

Tree of Paradise

The blocks in this vintage quilt go by many names, including Tree of Paradise and Tree of Temptation. It's an appropriate choice following our half square triangle event, don't you think? The blocks are approx. 20 inches square, and combine 2" half-square triangles units with solid squares. This is a two color quilt, combining tan and cream. It has a layout of 4 blocks by 4 blocks, with simple sashing and posts. The quilting is double lines, and this quilt was hand pieced and quilted, with machine binding. Enjoy!

Trading Fabric, Trading Ideas

The first Two Thimbles Half-Square Triangle Exchange was a great success - everyone seemed to have a lot of fun! We had nearly two dozen participants, and the number of half-square triangle units that people traded ranged from 28 (the result of one foundation paper) to over 500. There were over 3700 units traded overall. That's a lot of little bits! Some quilters kept some of their units for themselves and traded the rest, and others left things to fate and exchanged everything they had! We put the "currency" out on a couple of tables, did a little math, and let the frenzy begin. The classroom was pretty quiet with all the counting and concentration - you didn't want to lose your place!

Everyone came out with a good variety of half-square triangles to make into a scrappy project. We had some half-square project ideas out on display, combined with Edyta's book and hopefully there was enough inspiration to get started! Below are some pictures of the event, for those of you who couldn't make it!

We received some positive feedback about the variety of the squares, and everyone is excited to do it again! We plan to hold another Civil War-themed trading event in Spring 2012- watch for details!

Ready to talk Turkey?...

This seems to be the truth at Two Thimbles, anyway. These two birds may not be exactly the same but they definitely share that 'fabulous' trait that we strive for.

We added some frayed edges to November's Calendar quilt to give it some dimension, and we're pretty excited about how it turned out! The border applique pieces are bright fall colors and we toned it down to warm homespuns for the turkey himself. Pretty fun for a Thanksgiving decoration!

Our owl pincushion is more subdued, but just as darling. We've got kits for this little wool creature - the pattern is from Bunny Hill Designs and we used some newer winter-toned wools and a few Civil War prints as accents. Of course, we had to use the inspiration of the outdoors for our photo shoot- those fall colors fit in just right, don't you think?

Daily Grind...and a Party!

Are you a coffee enthusiast, or do you know someone who is? Then you know how important that daily cup can be. This fabric line, called Daily Grind from Quilting Treasures, is a cute little reminder to take pleasure from the little things, like the first cup of coffee! We've got some retro coffee pots, sweet little cup and saucer combos, and a plethora of coordinates. Flowers, beans, plaids, and dots... in primary colors with a chocolate splash. New tea towels, anyone? Or better yet...a barista apron?

Speaking of 'little reminders', an important event is coming up...the first ever Two Thimbles Half- Square Triangle Exchange! We've had this sign posted for a bit and now is the time for the fun to begin. We've chosen Civil War fabrics as the theme, and many of you bought our little 'cinnamon sticks' (based on Edyta Sitar's ideas from her book Friendship Triangles) or some half-square triangle paper and made lots and lots...of little bits! Now all that hard work will finally pay off...

Tuesday November 8th

beginning at 11:00 - til we're done!

We'll have some fun as we trade triangles and we'll offer some inspiring ideas for triangles - just in case you end up with a few too many! You can bring your trading 'currency' on the day of the event, but it would be even better if you can bring them early so we can get organized beforehand. You don't have to be present to participate, but who wants to miss out on a Two Thimbles party?

Banner Time!

There seems to be a banner theme going on in the store these days ... what a fun and easy way to brighten up a room!

The best part about this darling Halloween decoration pictured below - besides how cute it turned out - is the snap it is to make. We just fused coordinating prints onto the back of each little square, then pinked around the edges. The banner fabric is available by the row and comes in a variety of motifs- from a snazzy owl to a creepy witch. The fabulous grey and black trim that we used to hang the banner is available too. Perfect for a front window or doorway on Halloween? WE think so!!

This fun pennant is from Riley Blake Designs in conjunction with The Quilted Fish, and the fabric line is called Delighted!. We did a little topstitching around the edges to mix things up a little. We've got lots of coordinates; this line would be great for decorating a little girls' room (with a matching quilt to go along, perhaps?).

Jo Day

Jo Morton day has come and gone for another year! Jo celebrates her birthday this month, so we thought October was as good a time as any to have a celebration! Several stitchers participated in the block exchange, lots of quilts from many different artists were displayed, fabulous door prizes...and lots of delicious treats, of course! It was a fun way to break up the wet and windy fall weather. Enjoy the pictures!

A New Block of the Month Program

This new batik project is our latest Block of the Month adventure. The pattern, called Tonga Rhapsody from Wing and a Prayer Designs, features 12 different blocks and a unique zig-zag setting layout. We chose to substitute our own fabrics rather than use the ones in the pattern. Emphasized are deep purples and blues, dark reds and bright greens with a pop of orange and gold. The border fabric is a fabulous multi-colored ginkgo leaf print - you can't go wrong there! This is a 9-month program, and the quilt finishes at 92" x 106". Space is limited, so please contact us for more information or if you'd like to sign up!

Here is the beginning of the store sample- still a work in progress!

Pictured below are a few new pieces from Art Gallery. There is a range in patterns from modern geometric to delicate damask, mixed in with some lovely florals. The color pallette definitely has a contemporary feel. So many creative possibilities!

Jo's Birthday Celebration

October is birthday month...for lots of special people! For one, it's Jo Morton's birthday on the 19th of this month, so we're having a celebration here at Two Thimbles. Many of you know Jo as a designer of Civil War era fabrics and the inspiration behind 'Jo's Little Women Club' that meets here monthly. We're having an all about Jo day - so whip up a few exchange blocks and drop by for treats, of course! If you're a Jo fan you don't won't want to miss the fun.

Getting Ready for Halloween

October already? You know what that means... new Pincushion of the Month! This month we're using selvedges. This darling pincushion comes together in a snap, and the pom-pom trim adds something extra, don't you think? You could easily switch out the selvedges and make this pincushion take on a different theme. We've kitted up our version with a couple of Halloween-themed fat quarters to make a little treat bag to accompany this treat! You can place your new pincushion in the bag to give as a gift, or fill the pincushion with pins and use the treat bag for chocolate...or candy corn?

This charming pumpkin has been hanging in the store for a couple of weeks now, and it has certainly caught some attention. This is the October quilt from Kim Schaefer's Calendar Quilts pattern. We love the metallic fabric for the pumpkin, his button eyes, and of course the candy corn in the border!

A Little History

So many new projects...sometimes it's nice to take a break and talk about something with a little history. This post's vintage quilt (owned by Laurie Bingham, a Two Thimbles customer) features poison green and double pink, in a two-color style that is very striking. Unfortunately, our photos have washed the colors out and changed their intensity. So a little imagination, please! The pattern features (9) 7" blocks which are combined into a larger block of 4 T's, attached at their bases and pointing outwards. Interestingly, only three sides of this project have a border. One unusual feature is that it was hand quilted with two different colors of thread, not a common occurrence in older quilts. The maker is unknown, and it was purchased here in Washington.

Pictured below are several angles of the quilt, giving you an idea of the intricacy of the hand quilting and the formatting of the T pattern. What a beauty...how many hours of quilting would you guess?

A Fun Shopping Bag, and New Fabrics, Of Course!

With the increasing popularity of bring-your-own-shopping-bags, we thought it was time to create one of our own! One of our Two Thimbles staff designed this funky and fully-functional Roll-Up Market Tote. It's quick to put together, uses only a yard of fabric and rolls up small enough to fit in your purse. Perfect for a quick gift, or make a few for stylish grocery bags! It holds a ton of goodies (fat quarters anyone?).

These artsy new prints featured below are from the line Expressions from P&B Textiles and have just a hint of gold. The patterns range from stripes to large dots to paintbrush strokes. We've got a few fat quarter bundles- these could be a great addition to a Christmas project or an art quilt in the works.

Fall Projects

No better way to usher in fall than a couple of cloudy afternoons, right? This sweet little quilt
certainly has the right color combination going on ... cheddar, butter yellow, and a little
splash of chocolate brown make a fun little 9-patch on point. We have kits ready to go for this one.

And of course, we couldn't help snapping a picture with this darling little rocking chair prop - it's a perfect size!

Block exchanges can be a fun way to get a jump start on a scrappy project. Or, another way to go is this half-square triangle exchange program, where you can sew up your scraps and trade them for others! This program is based on what Edyta Sitar describes in her book Friendship Triangles, pictured below. The idea: purchase our premade 'cinnamon sticks' containing special half square triangle paper and scrappy Civil War era fabrics, add your own fabric scraps, and make up as many half square triangle units as you'd like to trade. You can also buy a pack of the paper and create solely from your own stash.

Then, on November 8th, come to the store to exchange half-square triangle blocks and socialize with other quilters! In the end, you'll come away with a bigger variety of half-square blocks and some possibilities for a start on a scrappy quilt - doesn't that seem like a great way to start the holiday season? If you can't make it to the event we can do your trading for you- but Two Thimbles events usually include treats, and you wouldn't want to miss that! More details about the event to come later - and now is a great time to get started on your 'trading currency', we've got cinnamon sticks all ready to go!

Gwen Marston's new book came in a few days ago - and it's definitely worth checking out! Gwen taught at Two Thimbles back in May, and her artistic insight was such an inspiration. In her new book, she delivers beautiful photographs of small projects, created in her desire to experiment with different techniques and color combinations. The book is narrated and printed in an artsy and whimsical fashion, making it a joy to explore. Below, the cover of the book is pictured, as well as some beautifully structured pages from inside.

We've got some new fabric choices coming in - linen blends from French General in grey and cream , a collection of brightly colored hand-dyed velvet pieces, and some fall-into-winter tone wools by the yard. Lots of inspiration for working with different and unique fabrics!

September Already?!

It is hard to believe that summer is quickly coming to an end!

Our September pincushion has a historical backstory. When quilters in the Civil War era created pincushions, they used buckshot to stuff them, because it was easy to come by. When putting together our version, it took a bit of work to find some shot (not our normal stock item!) and it quickly became apparent that using buckshot alone would make a pincushion almost too heavy to lift - so we chose a combination of shot and poly-fil. We've got the pattern and shot all ready to go for this, and you can choose your own fabric to match any style!

Our September Calendar Quilt seems pretty appropriate for this month, with school starting (thank goodness the strike was quickly resolved). We made a few changes to the monthly pattern , and the result turned out pretty cute, don't you think? We've got some kits available of this one, as well as the calendar quilt pattern set for all twelve months.

Quick Pinwheels

As much fun as we have sewing little bits together to make darling little quilts like those pictured below, sometimes it is nice to have a shortcut. Both of the little quilts are made using a pinwheel tool from Primitive Gatherings. Sew together scrappy blocks, cut out using the tool, and you're almost done!

There is a difference between the two projects, however. The quilt on the left, with the cheddar border, was created using the Patch It fabric shown in the photo. This clever fabric is made of 3 inch squares - so, rather than cutting and stitching scrappy 3 1/2" squares, all you have to do is cut out your desired quilt size and part of the work is already done! The end result has a little more repetition but the colors and prints are a great combination. A perfect choice when you need something fun and simple.

The cute little pinwheels pictured below are pieced using more traditional methods, rather than using a quick little tool. The results are just as fun, and we've got some kits available for this one! The pattern comes from Thimble Blossoms.

Don't the colors in those displays remind you of fall? We're not ready for that just yet, but you always need a little lead time for sewing so it is time to get started now for our favorite time of year! We've got some great Halloween fabrics out and who knows, there may be a few more to come? We'll keep you posted, but you'll have to stop in and check them out for yourself!

Crazy Quilts and More!

New classes always lend new inspiration to the store- and it's easy to get inspired from these projects!

We're excited to welcome Suz Litzsinger as a new teacher at Two Thimbles. She is teaching two classes this fall- one is a crazy quilt class and the other is a bag class.

Crazy in the 21st Century is a technique-based class, and focuses on two parts of crazy quilting: first, constructing blocks; and second, refining embellishment skills. There is also some discussion about planning for a final project. This full-day class is being offered twice- first on Sunday September 25th, and again on Thursday October 13th. Below are some finished projects by Suz- you can get an idea of the range of materials and embellishment techniques that are available in this type of quilting!

The second class is called Gypsy Carry-All. There are several options to create this bag: you can use panels or pieced blocks, either quilted or not- or if you happen to take the Crazy in the 21st Century class, you can use some of your embellished crazy blocks! This class focuses on the construction of the bag, with several size options, so bring your blocks to class ready-made and spend the day stitching everything together! The class is being offered on Sunday November 6th.

We do have samples on display at the store now- you'll have to come see these fabulous creations for yourself! Alternative dates will be considered, so please contact us if one or both of these classes sparks your interest and we can try to accommodate requests. Space is limited- let us know soon if you'd like to participate or have other questions!

Also, just a reminder - there is a spot available in Reynola Pakusich's workshop Contemporary Storm at Sea coming up in September. This class will be a lot of fun and the final product, which is now hanging in the store, is just gorgeous- so please let us know soon if you'd like to take part!

The Whirligig Quilt

Here is a vintage quilt that we are featuring this month. The name of this block pattern is called whirligig, although it has several other names including a swastika block. It is interesting to note that this pattern and its popularity in quilts came into existence long before the symbol was politically exploited in the mid 1900's.

In this project, the blocks are 8.25 inches square, and they consist of flying geese units which are about 1 inch by 2 inches. The layout of the quilt is 6 blocks by 6 blocks. The size of the finished quilt is approximately 80 inches square. This quilt was hand pieced and quilted, which is quite the accomplishment considering the size of the project! When this particular quilt was purchased, it appeared as though it had never been used, and is estimated to have been created between 1890 and 1900.

Here are some close-up photos of the blocks. Can you imagine all the time that someone spent to create this beautiful piece of art? The maker of this quilt is unknown.

Can you believe that August is here already? It feels like we are still waiting for summer to arrive...in any case, we felt that pie was probably the best way to celebrate the start of a new month, and possibly to encourage good weather. This darling little pincushion is called Sweet as Pie from Chitter Chatter Designs. It has certainly caught some attention, and the best part is, you can make any kind you want! Apple, cherry, blueberry, whichever is your favorite...just switch out the filling fabric, and you've got yourself a sweet treat!

This sweet, scrappy little bee skep is a great project for a cool day. It's our August version of Kim Schaefer's Calendar Quilt pattern. We've got kits ready to go, and we even have some little bee charms to attach after quilting ... the perfect addition!

New Fabric, New Ideas

New fabric arriving in the store is a great way to break up these warm summer days!

These new Civil War prints are from a variety of manufacturers including Marcus Brothers and Blue Hill Fabrics. Perfect for supplementing your stash in shirtings and basic colors, and there is also a large scale print featuring American presidents which would be great for starting a new memorial project!

This new Christmas fabric is called Julien, and is designed by Julie Paschkis. This is the same artist who designed the 2010 Shop Hop fabric, and who also works as a children's book illustrator. Her Christmas line showcases bright red, gold, coral, and green and includes a panel for stockings as well as one for a holiday perpetual calendar, as a countdown through December to the New Year. A great alternative to the traditional advent calendar.

This darling little apron just makes you want to fly off to France and start cooking, right? The bright colors and farmhouse theme are eye-catching and modern, and we are excited to see some other uses for this fun fabric besides an apron (although we do love aprons...)

New Projects

Well, it's starting to look like summer again...but how long will it last? You never know when you'll need a quilt project ready to go so here are some of our latest efforts to get you thinking!

This sweet little doll quilt uses a pattern from Civil War Legacies by Carol Hopkins Designs, called Aunt Agnes' Bloomers. The finished size is about 13" x 18", and we changed up the color palette a little by adding bubble-gum pink and a splash of orange. Appropriately, our kits are called A Taste of Cheddar.

This fun project is great for a baby quilt or wallhanging and the pattern includes a larger size quilt option. The pattern is called Victory Garden from Busy Bee Quilt Designs, and our version features the line Charlevoix from Moda. We've also featured the fabric in this month's pincushion. This quilt pattern looks great in shabby chic fabrics and would be quick to finish if if you still need a last minute wedding gift for William and Kate!

This striking, yet subtle flag quilt would make a nice addition to a seasonal quilt collection or a wonderful gift. Both the pattern and the feautured fabric were desiged by Minnick and Simpson for Moda, the same artists who designed the fabric line mentioned above, Charlevoix. The pattern is called Flag of Valor and the fabric line is called Quilts of Valor. We have kits and fabric bundles available for this collection.

On another note, we are getting even more excited for Reynola Pakusich's Storm at Sea class, coming up in September! We just received a sample quilt for display, so come by and take a look- it's very striking and beautiful in person, and there are still a few spots left in the class!

Our Super Summer Sale is coming up at the end of this week, and we will be celebrating what warm summer weather there has been... along with the anticipation of a lovely fall! July Pincushion

Hopefully everyone enjoyed their holiday this past weekend! The weather was actually decent...we're sure hoping it stays that way!

We're calling this month's pincushion the Dresden Jar. It was inspired by a customer's suggestion and help, and features scrappy fabric in a mini Dresden (signature Virginia Cole of Galloping Pony Studio), atop a cute little canning jar. Our kits come in a variety of colorways, with the option of embellishing with a button or a stuffed yo-yo. We filled our base with jelly beans, but we suggest buttons, spools of thread or... chocolate?? That might be the best option right there ... a little reward for finishing a project, maybe?

Projects for All the Seasons

It seems to be all about the panels here at the store lately. This is actually great news, because panels make for quick and easy gift ideas and holiday decorations. This flag panel is from a line called Liberty Ridge from Henry Glass & Co., and it features flags in three different sizes. Perfect for pincushions or placements, or a sweet little throw shown here. Start now and you know you'll be ready next Fourth of July!!

If you like splashy sunflower prints, then this might be a great project to be thinking about for a fall event! This line called Autumn Inspirations from South Sea Imports is perfect for a tablerunner or a wallhanging, (a pattern is found here) and this will make it hard not to anticipate autumn sunflowers!

As you know, it's never too early to start getting ready for Halloween here at 2T! This adorable panel from Wilmington Prints is quick to make into a throw or wall quilt. A pattern for a door hanging and treat bags can be found here. We even carry some fun fun fun prints to coordinate!

Advent calendars just got easier with this sweet little panel from South Sea Imports. Simple instructions on how to fold and stitch the panel quickly into an advent calendar with little pockets can be found along the side of the panel. We also have a few coordinates, so you can add borders or whatever you like!

We also have quilt labels in the form of a panel- the labels come in a large size and a variety of designs featuring vintage postcards - these will be ideal for making a memory or signature quilt. A great gift for a baby shower or wedding reception!

Contrary Wife Quilt

As promised, for this post we are featuring another antique quilt. This project, completed by an unknown maker, was made from the Contrary Wife block pattern. For that reason alone, I think this is a great quilt, don't you?! It's estimated to date between 1900 and 1920 and was hand-pieced and hand-quilted. The size is roughly 72" x 74", with 6 1/2" square finished blocks. This is not a small quilt, which gives you an idea and appreciation of the time spent to finish a project like this. This quilt was purchased in an Oregon antique shop.

Here is a close-up of the Contrary Wife quilt and its unusual backing fabric, a large print in completely contrasting colors (this photo doesn't show it well, but it is a green background)!

Rain or Shine

Looked like summer for a few days there, didn't it? The June Calendar Quilt should put you in the right mood. The cute little ants and bright red watermelon are perfect for a picnic!

July is all about fireworks and sunshine. We added bright red buttons to the center of the flowers to add some sparkle.

This little project is perfect for a world traveler or an adventurous little one. The size is great for a baby or throw quilt, and it has a pretty Paris motif. To add to all that, it's pretty simple to make! We still have kits available for this one.

Don't forget about the Western Washington Shop Hop, which starts this weekend!

On another note, our Farmer's Wife Club starts a new session on July 5. It will keep you busy making small sampler blocks on the first Tuesday each month. There are still a few spots available, so please let us know if you'd like to sign up!

Cake Quilts!

Summer must be around the corner, we've been getting a few hints that it might really happen, but nothing definite yet! So if you can't garden, you probably want to sew....or bake a cake?!

Here are two of our quilts featuring some of the lovely cake fabric from Lakehouse. There are lots of florals, polkadots and checks and ...amazingly decorated cakes featured in this fabric line. This first quilt features the darker fabrics in the group and we've titled it "Thimble Cake". The pattern utilizes fat quarters and we have kits and patterns available along with the fabric shown here.

This second quilt is our "anniversary cake" quilt - we got this finished just in time to celebrate the store Fourth Anniversary - with some cupcakes of course! A soft floral quilt, that just might be a perfect accessory at your next tea party celebration. Fabrics and kits are available for this one as well.

Although we aren't participating in the Western Washington Shop hop this year, we know lots of you are rounding up your travel companions and planning your routes. We hope you have a great time and get to see lots of great quilt shops!

Ready or not it's June!

How did we get here?.... still waiting patiently for summer to arrive amidst all the last minute school activities, graduations, summer weddings and vacation plans? Just be sure to schedule some time for projects you enjoy!

This month's 'pin cushion' is a variation you may just need to take on - recycling a favorite tie that you've been hesitant to get rid of, now has an important purpose as your favorite needle case! Our version uses an western theme necktie, no longer in vogue with the former owner, includes a few pages for needles and pins, and a small pocket for a thimble. We developed a simple pattern - and offer up some ideas for variations to make it your own.

Do you remember the Two Thimbles quilt from the 2010 Quilt Tour? The event had a nautical theme, and it was a lot of fun creating this playful quilt, pictured below, using all the fun block patterns from our local quilt shops.

Well, we're working on finding a new home for the quilt! The Friends of the Ferndale Library are holding a quilt raffle to benefit the New Ferndale Library Project. The raffle will be held at the Pioneer Pavilion at 2007 Cherry Street in Ferndale, from May 8th to July 30th. Visit this link for more information on the event.

This is a great cause, and as it seems that quilters are often book-lovers, what a great way to combine two passions!

More Calendar Quilts

We're playing catch-up this week- on blog-posting, that is. Pictured below are the March, April, and May Calendar Quilts. We've still got a few kits available!

For March we chose a muted grey background- appropriate for the Pacific Northwest in early spring, right? The flowers and bluebirds brightened up the scene.

With this rainy scene, there was no choice but to use bright neon colors- isn't that polka dot umbrella adorable? A real-life umbrella made of polka dots would be too cute- we've got some waterproof lining material available to make that happen. Ask us about it next time you're in!

Now THIS is what May is supposed to look like. We're just waiting for the pretty flowers and blue skies to come, aren't we?? Hopefully soon...

Moving Forward

For those of you who came to the store this weekend, thanks for helping us celebrate 4 years! If you missed us this weekend, you sure missed a fun time ... but there's still lots to celebrate!

Here is our May 2011 pincushion. Didn't we tell you there would be cake this month? This cute pincushion is a great size for bigger projects, and with the cake-printed fabric, we thought it was just right for our anniversary month.

For those of you interested in more traditional-type projects, we've got the new issue of Primitive Quilts and Projects in. There are some great ideas in it, and we've still got a few copies left.

We featured some new projects this weekend, and have kits available... including Sense of Direction, pictured below. The pattern came from Virginia Cole of Galloping Pony Studio and it's called Quilt Sense. We switched it up a bit from the pattern and used a four-patch block, featuring our favorite soft greys and a mixture of teal and aqua to create our version of this special pattern.

Getting Ready for the Holidays

Hopefully everyone's out enjoying the sunshine! Now if it will just warm up a little....and maybe stop snowing, hailing, raining and whatever else might be in the works!

Remember this project? We blogged not too long ago about our new Block of the Month program, Holidays at Home. We've held our first session and we wanted to show off the progress on the store version...

It's coming along and turning out pretty lovely, The picture doesn't even do the cheery reds and greens justice- you'll have to come see for yourself. Speaking of holidays, there's an important one coming up in May - Mother's Day is Sunday, May 8. Looking for some great gift ideas? Vintage Quilts

Beginning this week...which happens to be the 150th anniversary for the beginning of the Civil War, we are adding a new dimension to our blog.

About once a month, we will feature a vintage quilt and some will be from the Civil War era. We will share what we know about its makers, history, and snippets of what we know about the quilt. Initially, we'll be profiling quilts from a private collection, but we may through in extras along the way.

This first little doll quilt is from the Churn Dash block. It's maker's name is unknown, and it's age is estimated from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. The size of the quilt is about 16 1/2" x 22", and the blocks range in size from 5 1/2" x 5", which could indicate that it was made from extra blocks or, perhaps a novice, still perfecting those quarter-inch seams? This quilt was hand pieced and hand quilted. It was purchased from an antique shop in Aurora, Oregon.

Speaking of vintage quilts, here's a not-so-vintage version of an old idea. This pattern, called Vintage T from Galloping Pony Studio, was featured in our Anniversary Celebration in May 2010. You can see it made up in two different color ways and we still have a few kits and patterns left... and we even have a couple of those darling hand-crafted doll beds available!

April Showers

Hopefully all this rain means April showers really do bring May flowers... and in the meantime, it's a great excuse to stay inside and sew (stay positive, right?).

We've got our new pincushion all kitted up and ready to go- this one's a breeze and sooo (sew?) cute. Just a simple pillow and some decorative ribbon as an embellishment, and you're all set!

We're staying busy with all the new activities starting up in the store- from the Michael Miller Clubhouse to the Holidays at Home Block of the Month program. It's nice to see everyone getting inspired to start some spring sewing or future projects!

We're thinking birds...

Another Quilt Tour is over! We have had a busy couple of days, handing out block patterns and showing off our bird nest quilt- we're excited about how it turned out! Hopefully all our local quilters have had a chance to check out all 14 shops and gotten some inspiration from all the amazing quilts on display. Below is a picture of our quilt, in case you missed it:

Now for some store updates- this new line from Moda is called Dominique II, and it features deep red, chocolate brown, and black, with a bird and leaf motif (Birds are a popular theme these days, aren't they?). We've kitted up some tablerunners for a great housewarming gift or addition to your dining room.

Bright colors, a scroll motif, and roosters- we say it's a perfect combination! This line from Henry Glass & Co., called Early Riser, already has some fans in the quilters who've come to visit the shop this week. Apron, anyone? We are thinking tablerunner, tote bag, or even throw quilt...there are tons of possibilities.

Birds of a Feather

We are just a week away from the Tri-County Quilt Tour event, so we hope you have your travel route planned and your quilting friends have cleared their schedules to join in the fun!

Our bird themed pin cushion is ready to go...we've got some fun and colorful hand-dyed wool for these kits so you'll want to choose a color that suits your style!

We've had boxes and boxes of new fabric arriving - and our Clubhouse block of the month kicks off this Saturday so we have lots of new projects underway. Some new trims - birds (of course), tractors, ladybugs and snowmen...and a few decorative buttons and charms to add to the mix.

This strawberry ensemble could have you in the mood for strawberry shortcake - we've got a great table cloth and tea towel set that is a great gift item - just hem and go - a great bridal shower gift tucked into a picnic basket?

Christmas in April

Why start thinking about Christmas when it's only March, you ask? Well, one reason is because the weather seems to be changing seasons on us daily (isn't it springtime yet?). But a more exciting reason is the new holiday Block of the Month program at Two Thimbles. This monthly club will start up in April and finish up in November, just in time for the holidays!

The finished product is a 62" x 62", a good sized wall-hanging or throw, perfect for a holiday gift or decoration. The club will meet the first Friday of each month from 1-4 pm for instruction and sewing time. The cost is $24.95 per month and includes the pattern and fabric for that month. Please call or email if you'd like more information- we're looking forward to get this club underway!

On another note, our quilt is on display for the upcoming Tri-County Quilt Tour 2011: "Birds of a Feather". This annual event consists of 14 local shops, each of which designs a block then makes up their own version of the quilt using the blocks of all the participating stores. The result is 14 fabulous quilts, all of which are completely unique. We took a modern approach to ours- you'll have to stop in and see for yourself!

Bright and Cheery

Bright seems to be the theme of things these days at the shop- this collection from Michael Miller blends with coordinates in dots and stripes. Primary colors pop in these new arrivals. If you look closely, you'll see that some of the dot prints vary in color and size as you move across the width of the fabric. We have these funky dots in shades of blue, reddish pink, and a green and blue combination. You'll have to come see for yourself- could be the start of a bright new project or a perfect addition to an old one! We're working on a quilt and kits using these fabrics and our classic Feng Shui pattern-so watch for that soon!

It seems that sometimes, simple is best- at least, that seems to be the case with our chair quilt. This simple quilt uses only 4 fabrics, and yet no one can argue that it doesn't succeed in popping with color! The pattern comes from Cherry House Quilts, and our take on it was only one of a number of options- in other words, you could pick a favorite focal fabric (even a directional one will do) and a couple of coordinating solids, and have yourself this fab throw in no time!

For those of you on our mailing list, you've heard the news about the club that will be starting up soon at Two Thimbles. We've got a display board and some sample blocks up at the store, so come see for yourself what the fuss is all about! Stitching up a storm

Hopefully everyone got through that windstorm over the weekend without too many power outages - it's no fun (and pretty difficult) to sew in the dark!

Looking for a relatively simple, yet striking new project? This pattern, featuring the Moda line Maison de Garance, combines traditional reds and browns with geometric appeal to create an eye-catching result. The pattern is available on the Moda website - and you can find the fabrics here! Let us know if you want some help putting the ingredients together for this fabulous quilt. We added some borders to our version, which just goes to show - in quilting, there's never harm in adding your own twist to make it fit your vision!

Speaking of adding charm to projects, take a look at this darling dress- it started with a store-bought shirt! We used organic gingham from Michael Miller to create the skirt and trim. Perfect for a walk in the park- on the sunny day that is SURE to be coming up soon!

On another note, Jo Morton's new line is here! Hurrah is a 20 piece collection, featuring navy and medium blues, strong reds, and cream shirtings. Patterns range from large stars to small starbursts and stripes. Our monthly Jo's Club gave their approval of the new fabrics this morning, so be sure to come check it out if you are a Jo fan!

Red and Pink

The Karin Franzen workshop this weekend was a success! Karin was a real inspiration and participants had a wonderful time. Pictures coming soon! Now, back to real life...

New month means new pincushion at Two Thimbles! Check out the Victorian Slipper that's being featured as the February Pincushion of the Month. We got the idea from a fellow blogger who first created this shoe out of paper. The soft floral design makes this tool a pretty addition to your sewing room. The toe is stuffed to keep your needles in check, and the heel has enough room to hold a little pair of scissors or a spool of thread. Kits will be available later this week!

Some more inspirational ideas include a sweet little lunch bag (for some sweet treats!) or a darling stuffed Scottie. This festive wallhanging is displayed behind the counter with an addede banner hanging in front- just folded paper and ribbon, is that a great idea for a party decoration or what?

Thinking Spring Thoughts...

With a couple of days (or hours) of sunshine, maybe it's time to think about pulling out that spring sewing? We are so excited about our new knits- lime green and turquoise make for a fun, bright skirt or shirt. There is a black and grey colorway available as well, so stop by to get some inspiration for a new project.

On another note, our Calendar Quilt monthly project is up and running! We have January and February on display... with March soon to come. The cheerful snowman that is featured in the January quilt, as well as the soft blues and creams for February, have been a hit. Look for March's project coming soon!

There are new arrivals in the store often, so come by to play with new fabric - we have roosters, polka-dots and paisleys, some bright and light contemporary prints...and don't forget about the vegetables, eggplants to peas & onions. Projects old and new

I hope I'm not the only one playing catch up this month! It's time to finish up some old projects and .....start some new ones don't you think?! We completed the vintage memories quilt - from our block of the month we featured last spring, and it sure looks refreshing on these gray rainy days. It is satisfying to get projects through the final stages to completion....but don't you agree - it's way more fun to start something new?

Of course we have some new goodies - great red and cream Scandinavian toweling perfect for a valentine creation and we're getting new batiks unwrapped and new spring lines are starting to arrive as well. We have a couple of months of our calendar quilts on display - and we are gearing up for a few (!) new block of the month quilts so we may just have the perfect project to get you inspired! We haven't quite completed the transition to spring but we're getting in the mood for some softer, brighter colors and fresh samples are underway. We love this chair quilt completed by one of the students who took a class this past summer from Alethea Ballard...maybe I'll get mine finished now too!

We have a few small 'snowball' quilts on display, created by some of our customers so stop by and take a look at those - we hope these quilts are the only snowballs we'll be seeing this week!

Happy New Year...and all that!!

We are so proud of counting all our fat quarters, organizing the cubbies, and finding buried treasures - what a great way to spend New Year's Day! Take a good look at these fq bins, since you know all that organized chaos won't last long.

We're having fun with our adaptation on the yo-yo for this month's pincushion. We made three variations of our pincushion kits for this month - they are featured on the red background. We will also offer a class - a kit of fancy fabrics (taffeta, silk, velvet) similar to those used for the eclectic collection featured on the green background.

Class options are Saturday January 22nd or Tuesday February 8th....call or stop by the store if you'd like to sign-up!

December PinCushion

December is in full swing...and somehow there is more, rather than less to tackle in terms of holiday preparations and year-end projects! What is with that? A time-out for some stitching seems like the perfect answer. Here is our wintery snowman pincushion (or ornament or etc.) you can stitch up in just a bit of time. We'll hope that this represents the extent of the 'snow' we have to contend with til maybe Christmas day (for a few hours, right?). Happy Holidays!

Gwen Marston is coming!

I really can't say much other than how excited I am that Gwen is going to be here in May. Yippee! I've had a couple of opportunities to witness Gwen in action in the past and I've got to say she's a great individual with a fun attitude. I'm not sure if it gets better than that! I hope you can juggle your calendar and commitments to make one of these dates work.

Holiday Tables

Are you getting ready for a holiday feast? We have great options for table settings and these can double as gifts to give or receive...so consider using some fun fabric for decorating not just creating a quilt. We may even have the beginnings of a little something to take my focus off all the pumpkin making we did over the last few weeks! No, it has nothing to do with chocolate, although we've certainly made a dent in the Halloween treats...hmmm. Holiday baking anyone?

We've got new fabrics, batiks, Maison de Garance, Lily and Will....gift items for quilters (calendars, books, jelly rolls, pin cushion kits)....and some quick projects to make for gifts for others or a treat for yourself. Stop by and get inspired to create something for the season!

It's been so long...

since my last post...

So much for having goals, deadlines, reminders and to-do lists...eventually, some of it does get accomplished but it seems more by chance than well orchestrated plan most of the time!

Here is a variety of photos to ponder...evidence of recent quilt classes held at the store and other goings on. We had a group of friends in for the Storm at Sea class taught by Peggy Gelbrich and they were working with lots of different color combinations ranging from tropical storms to traditional nor'westers! As a couple of these photos hint some people tend to be more organized than others, but a little sugar usually helps get another seam or two accomplished!

And here is another take on a quilt collage - built from amazing fall foliage from the garden...happy stitching!

November arrives!

After a mild or do I mean wild night of Trick-or-Treating...November has arrived with wind, and rain and more rain and yes, I think fall is here to stay. No excuses about needing to garden now, it is full on sew time!

I've called it quits a few times, but cannot seem to make it stick. I keep seeing fabrics with a whole new purpose in mind as I envision the next perfect pumpkin. So I give in...just a few more pumpkins for the harvest season? Thanksgiving table decoration or hostess gift? I'm thinking Fab-u-lous!

So we're on a roll and created these little acorn pin cushions for our November pincushion to treasure. They are perfect for your needles - or just a small travel pincushion. We used real acorn caps and these are just pretty darn cute no matter how many you make!

Take a moment and catch your breath...and stitch up something fun!

Jo Morton Birthday Celebration

Greetings...we are finally having that blustery fall weather, and since Halloween is just around the corner, that seems about right! We celebrated Jo's birthday (ok, just another excuse for cupcakes from Icing on the Cake - yummy!), with fabric, friends, quilts and good eats! Hope to make this an annual event, so if you couldn't find the time this year, perhaps it will fit your schedule next fall. Here are a few photos from our day!

Creating and Crafting

We are having a fabulous time creating great bags with Agnes. Her latest pattern 'the Paris Crossover Bag' is perfect for a laptop and versatile, as you can see from this class photo!

Can you believe, we still can't get enough of halloween? Of course, the beginnings of halloween candy have arrived, but even more profuse at the moment - Pumpkins! I will admit there has been some competition amongst a few of us, and they just keep multiplying and evolving. These pumpkins won't get yucky sitting on your porch in the rain though - they'll carry through to a harvest table decoration in November. One customer suggested perhaps we'd gone a bit 'crazy' with them...but hey we're working up to a Christmas version so ya never know!

Happy Birthday to all the October birthdays out there! What a great month to celebrate...birthday cake, halloween...more chocolate, who hoo!

We're serving up petite gateau's as our pin cushion this month, from a pattern by Fig Tree Quilts. These can be whipped up in a quick moment from charm squares and, like any good dessert, you'll want more than one!

We hope you had a chance to take in the La Conner Quilt Fest and participate in the 91-mile yard sale event this past weekend. If not, you'll have to find another opportunity to get out and about and see what's new! We have started taking sign-ups for the Karin Franzen workshop scheduled for next January and it is sure to be an amazing opportunity to absorb some of Karin's techniques.

Well as usual, time is flying by and I am not where I planned to be in terms of items checked off my 'to do' list...you'd think I'd be used to that by now? How can it be nearing October so soon?

Anyway, here is a quick preview of a couple of the items we'll be featuring in our upcoming gifts classes. One is a gift bag/lunch bag/treat bag use your imagination as to all the great things you could fill this bag up with. And the other is a journal cover - very versatile and tons of ways to embellish and personalize it. We thought the travel theme might be good for those keeping a record of their RV trips...but you could also create a cover directed to pretty much any hobby or create one in the style of the recipient for those true journal writers on your gift list.

We've got some additional ideas coming - so think fun, versatile and quick gifts to make for friends or family and have some fun while you're doing it. Check our website for a current class list or stop by the store to see more!

Well, it must be a good day when we get a new shipment of Jo's fabrics (Spice Chest) out on the shelves, and a customer from another state arrives claiming "Jo sent me"! How good is that timing? The new collection is just in time for fall color and really looks great with the shirtings and ravenwood series we already have on the shelves.

We had visitors from Tennessee, Oklahoma, Colorado and Oregon today, along with several familiar faces from around our local area...it is great to have our regular customers visit and see what's new, and it is fun to share what we're doing here with other like-minded stitchers from outside the area. September Pincushion

Well, here she is, our new mannequin pin cushion for September. This is the smaller version of the 2 sizes in the pattern, so you can even go bigger if you want!

Looks like the rain has arrived just in time for back to school...nothing beats puddles and mud for a good walk to school, don't you think?

We have lots of new fabric we're getting out on the shelves and a few new class samples to show off. Christmas bolts are still arriving so you're not behind on your holiday projects yet! Stop by and see what's new.

The Civil War Tribute quilt is almost assembled, and it is coming together nicely - we still have kits left for this reproduction quilt, so you may want to get that item on your holiday wish list!

I hope I'm not the only one that thought it should still be last week...where are these fabulous HOT sunny days going? We just got our class list together, so that should be hitting your email soon. There is a copy on the website too, and we're gathering project samples so they'll be finding their way to the store displays soon.

Here is a snapshot of a darling stitchery combined with english paper piecing and applique techniques all in one...it will be off to it's new home soon. I'm pretty sure the bride & groom don't read our blog so no giving away the surprise there. What a great personalized wedding gift to receive! This project is designed by the same artist (Lynette Anderson) that did the neat Magical Christmas piece we have on display. We love her designs!

Haunted Mansion

We love our latest Halloween quilt, quick and fun, green and halloween...pretty much covers all the bases! We have a few kits for this one, and tons of great Halloween fabric to choose from.

Class is scheduled with Alethea Ballard, for The Chair of your Dreams. It will be on Friday August 27th, from 10:00-4:00pm. We still have a few spots left, and her sample quilts are here, and they are fabulous! Stop by to sign up and visit the chair quilts!

If you have any stray 12 inch (finished size) blocks to donate to the collection for Middle Tennessee, we'll be sending in a box at the end of this month. Anna Maria Horner is heading up this drive and we have more details available here at the shop.

Summer Harvest

The harvest is on, and we've got velvet figs this month! Hand-dyed velvet, a bead or two and you've got a centerpiece for your sewing table...The pattern is called Orchard's Bounty, by Fig Tree Quilts.

We are having fun with new quilt samples...Castle Peeps, Haunted Mansion and Peppermint Swirl kits are all ready to go, and we have some of the new 3 Sisters group Park Avenue, including charm squares and a new sample from the Madeline pattern. Of course we slipped in a few new fabrics too, batiks, novelty prints, and a great new 'pear' solid-colored texture from Robert Kaufman...more colors to follow.

I'm in the process of setting up a class for August 27th - it is in the works, so all the details are not available yet. This will be a class featuring Alethea Ballard and tie into her upcoming book by C&T Dream Chair Quilts that will be published later this year. How cool is that?!

Summer Sewing

Greetings...we have been busy sewing up fun projects in the summer heat. (You can click on the photo to get a better view...or stop by the store to see the goodies in person!) We have some new fabric lines in shades of peach and pink with touches of grey and butter yellow...so we whipped up a little girl's dress, a couple of bags and threw in a pink and green quilt! We used two patterns, Frenchy Bag by Amy Butler and the Multi-Tasker Tote by Anna Maria Horner for the bags and the quilt is from a pattern by Abbey Lane, Octopus Garden. There are lots of fun sewing ideas in the new Sew Serendipity book - we've offered patterns by Kay Whitt previously, and really like her new book. Definitely a few options for a bit of sewing inspiration!

Where does the time go?

Am I the only one with this burning question?! How did it get to be the middle of July already? I distinctly remember getting ready for shop hop just yesterday, and I can't figure out how it got to be time to be thinking fall, holidays, back to quilting (I mean school)! It's not that I want to rush summer, but I am having a great time playing with the latest and greatest Halloween fabrics!

Who doesn't need a pillowcase with glow in the dark fabric accents, or an apron with a black & white polka dot ruffle...but wait, there's going to be more!! And I'm not even talking about the chocolate.

Now that I mention chocolate, I'm sooo excited that Icing on the Cake has chosen to open a storefront in the downtown area. Pretty much love that. Just ask next time you're in, and I can tell you all about it.

For the rest of the world, that doesn't want to talk about chocolate, there are the new Jo Morton fabrics, Attic Shirtings. Thirteen great new neutral backgrounds with fun prints and color combinations. They'll be great with most of your projects!

Sweat Shop

Greetings!

Hot weather has come and gone, but the sweat shop is still in full swing. We had a group in stitching on Friday amidst the fans, and today the temperature is back to normal and we have another group hard at it. I have new boxes of fabric to unpack, a couple of quilt samples to quilt, and a new quilt rack for display! I guess it was a productive weekend.

July Pincushion

I hope your July 4th celebration included more sunshine than ours did! Fireworks and strawberry shortcake almost made up for the chilly temperatures, but we could use a little summertime any day now.

The Day After

Ahh, I can't say I'm not enjoying a quiet day-after-shop-hop today! We had over 2000 hoppers stop in this year, and combined with the longer store hours, it takes a few days to acclimate and get back to reality.

Although our weather is not cooperating for a summer-time feel, 4th of July is almost here, and perhaps an americana quilt is just what is needed to compensate for the cooler temperatures we're having! This quilt was a hit during the shop hop, and the striped ticking and patriotic fabric from Jo Morton's Banner Day works in well with our reproduction fabrics. Since this project kit flew out the door during the hop, we'll have to get busy on some fresh store samples. Halloween anyone?!

Shop Hop 2010

The Western Washington Shop Hop is around the corner, and we are almost ready! I hope you have your passport and map ready to go. You can get more details and download a passport here Western Washington Shop Hop.

We have some fun items added to our inventory - a selection of Weeks hand-dyed floss, some hand-crafted doll beds (like ours in the photo with our Vintage T anniversary quilt)...and it is time for fabulous, fun Halloween fabrics! We've got glow in the dark, a great selection of bats and webs and dancing witches & cats...etc. With this 'summer' weather you might as well get ready for fall? Oh yes, and a few Christmas fabrics are starting to trickle in for anyone that likes to get a head start on their holiday planning.

With all the focus on preparing for shop hop and summer adventures, we still plan to take time out and participate in the call for quilts to help out those hit hardest in the recent flooding in the Nashville area. Anna Maria Horner, one of our favorite contemporary fabric designers is coordinating a quilt relief effort. If you're interested in contributing, please plan to drop off your donation blocks here at the store and we'll take care of the rest!

Vintage Memories

Is summer here? Are we ready for shop hop? Maybe yes, Maybe no...okay, probably not....but a little bit of sun, and a little headway on cutting up fabric for block packets.

Here are a couple of photos of our latest block of the month project. It is based on a pattern by This & That, Vintage Memories. We selected a combination of fabrics from 3 different Moda lines - 2 groups designed by French General and the third line is called Martinique. The quilt features a combination of aqua and mocha, with some accents ranging from shell pink to rouge red! It is fun to see the blocks coming together for this one and we'll see if we can get it wrapped up in short order.

We're putting out the latest line of Jo Morton, 25 soft colors called "Complements", and we've added some new batiks and reproduction shirtings and basics. So we're trying to keep some fun stuff happening until the shop hop starts June 23rd.

Sew It!

The count down is on and we are madly preparing for the upcoming shop hop...2000 people in 5 days is just a bit more than our usual level of activity! June 23rd will be here before we know it.

We just got our shop sample completed for this Sew It themed project - great inspiration for a makeover of the sewing room I'd say! Red and black and vintage flavor all in one makes for a striking combination of fabrics and we added a few of our own choosing to complete the project. We've got kits prepared and some panels and fabrics available, along with the Sew It Book from Indygo Junction, Amy Barrickman.

Lots of other new goodies coming in, like misty fuse by-the-yard, and the heat n' bond product to create your own laminated fabric...Triangulation's software for ANY size half-square triangle - love it! And yes, more fabric to choose from. Hope to see you soon!

Ski to Sea weekend is drawing to a close and June arrives tomorrow, the kids will be out of school soon and maybe we'll have summer weather to match? Here is a sneak peek at our pin cushion for June, we have kits prepared although you do have to provide your own M&M's (or other treasures) to fill the jar! This "Little Bird Pinkeep" pattern is from Liberty Star by Renee Plains. Her new book, A Bird in Hand, has some great projects, including lots of birds! We've got lots of new fabric packed on the shelves, and we're trying to get a few projects completed so we'll have some kits ready and new samples to show off before too long and ... a couple of fabulous classes are in the works so we'll have some details available soon.

Under Construction

Larkin Van Horn spent the day at the shop today and helped a group of stitchers create small houses....a great variety of fabrics, threads and beads were used and all kinds of creativity was happening. Here are a few photos of some works-in-process! Looks like a great play day to me and I think we may want to watch for an upcoming issue of Architectural Digest for a finished product or two!

Thimble Cup Pincushion

I hope your Mother's Day was enjoyable! We couldn't have asked for better weather.

Here is a peek at our May pincushion, in honor of our store Anniversary, we opted for a thimble theme. We have kits available and I found the secret weapon for stuffing this one - a few metal washers and presto, the perfect weight!

Our website update is still in the works, so if you've had trouble with the website and/or noticed some deficiencies...stay tuned, we are working on it!
