I have wanted to make a herringbone quilt for quite some time and when Two Thimbles received the Hearty Good Wishes fabric line from Moda, designed by Janet Clare, I knew what to do with it! I found this free pattern from Moda which was exactly what I wanted for my project.

I used one jelly roll from the collection and 2.5 yards of the cream tonal background.
I unrolled the Jelly roll and separated the strips into light, medium, and dark piles. I then squinted my eyes to identify the light, medium, and dark strips on the pattern. I counted 110 light strips, 39 medium, and 35 dark. I decided to use the cream background from the fabric line for my light strips, the light blue and tan fabric for my medium strips, and the dark blue fabric for the dark strips. I saved the prints with cream background for the binding.
This pattern allows for directional fabric as you can just flip the strip to the opposite row so the whales swim right side up.
The directions do not explain how to sew diagonal strips together: make sure to account for the 1/4 inch seam when sewing the strips together. For example, offset the top strip (up or down) 1/4 inch to accommodate the bias cut edge (see close-up photo)

Press to the direction indicated in the pattern after sewing strips together, when sewing rows together press the seams open. Pin every pieced intersection...and you'll be happy with your end result!
Sew the rows together in opposite directions.
Lee at 2T quilted the top and I hand-sewed the binding on it. It is hanging in the shop – check it out and maybe it will inspire a herringbone quilt project for you!
