5 Little Quilts, 10 Big Years

It takes a village may just be our theme song of late!  Although some of this effort was underway months ago, all the moving parts just didn't come together until now - so here it is with an extra drumroll for teamwork!

Alot of people contributed in various ways to our Little Quilt effort this year - we have a multi-talented college student employee with the skills to create our special pattern cover, and we had some expert sewing and consulting help from our shop team including those who come out of retirement, leave children unattended, and volunteer their time to help out in ways they don't even realize to help get the job done!  Thanks to ALL of our customers, employees (former employees too!), friends and family who have contributed to making our 10 Big Years all that they have been!

We've got five special little quilts - all sourced from vintage quilt images on Pinterest - you can check out our Pinterest board for the original inspiration projects here: https://www.pinterest.com/twothimbles/5-little-quilts-10-big-years/

It was fun to look for similar current fabrics to feature in these projects and also create our own spin where we wanted to.  We have some of the feature fabrics bundled as fat quarters and also a great instruction booklet that includes all 5 quilts.  These will be posted on the website soon.

Hope you have a chance to stop in and see the quilts, we had a great show and share with customer quilts added to our classroom wall for admiration earlier this week and we do appreciate seeing all the creativity!  Thank-you for a great 10 years!

Latest quilts and projects

Here's a new little quilt from our Anniversary pattern Criss-Cross pathways - this version we used a few less fabrics and limited the colors to a subdued gray and blue combination - the inspiration came from this larger quilt pictured below that features a great stripe border from the Settlement collection of fabrics Jeanne Horton for Windham fabrics.  Again, we mixed up some blues and grays and added a touch of charcoal for emphasis.  The pattern is fat quarter friendly and you can go as scrappy as you like - so this would be a good one to use up some leftover reproduction fabrics and mix and match as you choose.  The pattern, New Market is from Red Crinoline quilts.

We've been busy preparing for fall...you know that means lots of fun and festive Halloween preparations but in addition to costumes and chocolate - we've gotten a couple of bags made lately - they are both from Noodlehead patterns - and I am really pleased with the construction methods and details she covers in the patterns.  There are some other really great projects in the new book - Handmade Style besides bags so stop by and check 'em out!  These bags have left for good homes but I think I've got ideas for a few more favorite fabric combinations.....

Criss-Cross Pathways
Thanks so much Suz!  So glad you took the time to create our pattern this year - and for those of you who caught a sneak peek at what else Suz created using the same block pattern...she's back in the sweat shop working out a pattern for that project too - so watch for details!  It is a great combination of applique, stitchery and pieced blocks!

The Trunk show of string projects from Rana Heredia of Sewn into the Fabric is on display in the class room!  The projects all feature a combination of string piecing and scraps that will give you some new ideas - stop in before the 22nd to see these colorful quilts in person and you'll surely want to pick a new project and dive into your scraps!

Another year another quilt...Anniversary Bouquet

We chose a simple pattern of small strips set with alternate plain blocks - a pattern from the Red Button Company, and changed it up in terms of the color palette.  The Spring bouquet version features some hand-dyed wool in raspberry, pink and blue, and couple of the prints from the recent Old Sturbridge line of fabric by Marcus Brothers.

Add the wool, a few little buttons and some special stitchery and you have a simple and pretty doll quilt!  The buttons come with the pattern, and we have it available as a separate item so you can put your own fabrics together or choose one of our kits.  The blue version features grey heathered wool for the posies, combined with a deeper green hand-dyed wool for the leaves.  Simple and sweet?!

Thank-you to all our customers for SEVEN great years!  Happy Stitching!

Wrapping things up...

We have some loose ends we need to post about, so this is a bunch of mixed up topics and now you can't say we don't save the best for last?  We are working hard on getting caught up...not sure just what on, but always something right?   Here are two gorgeous examples of the Lincoln's Sampler challenge project - we didn't have a strong finish for this challenge, but perhaps these two examples will prompt those of you who are stalled out to get 'er done!!  The layout change on this first one really changes up the quilt we think!  Thank-you Judy and Evelyn for jobs well done and sharing your quilts!!

We have a couple of overdue winner's to talk about....from the Tri-County quilt tour event, Nancy Peck  got a whole handful of gift certificates - who hooo!!   And (drum roll here please....) our Two Thimbles gift certificate winner is Louise Murphy and we'll sneak a picture of her soon shopping for something she really needs!  Congratulations and thank you for attending the Quilt Tour event...we've got a great theme planned for next year, so creative ideas are starting to be tossed around for our project.

We have a couple of photo updates from the workshop in March with Mary Elizabeth Kinch - one little completed project and some big progress with some little pieces.  What fun projects!

Evelyn Outside Her Box

We think that Laurie is well on her way to joining the SPA (that is Small Pieces Aficionado) Society!  Check out some other great completed small pieces work here.
Laurie's Peel 1/4 done!
And the most requested recipe from the workshop...Bob makes these for me, I mean our workshops, and although the recipe works just fine, I found that having a cook deliver them works pretty well and they taste great too....Can't beat that!  We'll have to make these a staple at any of our future events so that may just be reason enough to sign up for classes and sew-ins!  If you click at the bottom of the photo, the receipe will enlarge and you'll be all set to head to the kitchen.

And last in our round of housekeeping items, we finally have a completed Thimble SIX quilt pattern from our anniversary sew along last year.  Which means we are also close to rolling out a new anniversary quilt, and this time, you won't have to wait for a pattern - I found the perfect one waiting on the shelf!  So watch for a new little quilt soon.

Hope you are enjoying our moments of sunshine!  And just a reminder, we are closed on Sundays for the rest of the summer ~ Enjoy some sewing time!

Thimble SIX Medallion Quilt Step TWO

Are you ready for step 2?  This step is a quick frame, and we used a directional vine print from Laundry Basket Quilts for Moda and fussy cut it for a more distinct border.

Our pattern and fabric kits are now available online or at the shop!

Thimble SIX step 2

We have great new fabrics and notions arriving...can you believe it is time for holiday fabric to start happening...and yes, that means Halloween!  We expanded our selection of aurifil 50 weight thread to include a broader range of neutrals, and we have some fun patterns and projects underway.

One new reproduction fabric collection - all 36 pieces of Judie Rothermel's party of 12.  We created some 1/8th yard rolls of the complete collection which is more than enough to do a scrappy project.  Like this great quilt that features 30 of the prints - created from a template pattern by Red Crinoline quilts called Lizzie's Scrap Bag.  A fun project and a great treat to work with a complete collection of fabrics.  Stop by and check it out!

Pincushion in a Box

Here's our new pincushion...isn't it fabulous! Those little rulers are printed with the shop name and info,  and we turned them into these fantastic little boxes with the help of a favorite local craftsman. The little fabric pouf pin cushion is super easy to make, and the extra compartment is just perfect for a little pair of scissors, some thread, paper hexagons...you name it! We have a few different styles of individual boxes, as well, so you can deck out your sewing room 'Two Thimbles' style!

Many of you asked about an anniversary doll quilt when we had our Anniversary Sale in May...we finally rolled out our latest creation. This darling turquoise and chocolate combo we're calling the Chocolate T quilt, features an appropriate T block done up in scrappy browns, with cocoa accents and a lovely aqua border. We have some kits available for this one...some include the gorgeous striped backing, or you can choose your own! Worth the wait, we're thinking...

We've made some pretty big changes to the layout of the store...this means one bolt of fabric may not go back in the same spot from one day to the next, but it also means opportunity for new inspiration. Pictures coming soon...or you can always come see for yourself!

Happy Stitching!
